Foundered Coronary Papillae
Courtesy of RA Eustace, p17 Explaining Laminitis and its Prevention by Robert A. Eustace MRCVS
Hoof wall abraded away at the ground surface of the hoof is replaced by new hoof wall generated at the coronary band at the top of the hoof. New horn is added to existing horn at the coronary band. Newly generated horn follows the direction of existing horn. After founder the bone and the existing hoof wall are aiming in different directions. New hoof growth must follow in the direction of the old hoof wall rather than in the direction of the bone. The hoof wall in the photo above will never reach the ground. It is growing nearly parallel to the ground. What is supporting the skeleton of this horse's leg?
